Germany needs an extra 2,000 judges and prosecutors to process fivefold increase in terror cases

Germany’s judicial system is groaning under the strain of an explosion in terror cases since Chancellor Angela Merkel opened the door to unlimited numbers of migrants in 2015.

The German Attorney-General opened a shocking 1,200 terror cases in 2017, of which around 1,000 were related to radical Islamic terrorism, Tagesschau reports.

This represents a fivefold increase on 2016, when the figure stood at around 250 — with roughly 200 cases being related to radical Islam.

Sven Rebehn, the head of the German association of judges, has warned that the system is struggling to cope with the sheer volume of its expanded caseload, with burden particularly heavy in the migrant hotspots of Berlin, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, and Hamburg

The judicial federation has calculated that around 2,000 additional judges and prosecutors are needed if the country hopes to tackle the growing terror threat and clear the backlog, or else face real difficulty in the near future.

Migrants have not only increased the workload of the courts in the field of terrorism — for example, 91 per cent of a 48 per cent surge in Bavarian rape cases was attributed to migrants in September 2017.

But the costs of expanding the judicial system’s capacity to absorb the surge in terror cases is not the only expense to fall on Germany as a consequence of mass migration.

The cost of the country’s more recent arrivals was predicted to reach close to 100 billion euros by 2020 last year — with the figure likely to have increased since then.

Islamism is ‘an evangelical movement that seeks to destroy countries that are free’

Developed countries throughout the Western world are slowly realizing that radical Islamic terrorism is not limited to the Middle East. Even so, few realize just how aggressive the proponents of Islamist ideology really are. M. Zudhi Jasser, a Muslim who champions American freedom and separation of Sharia (Islamic law) and state, explained just how pernicious this ideology can be.

Islamism is “a forward aggressive offensive ideology, an evangelical movement that seeks to destroy countries that are free,” Jasser, founder and president of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD), told PJ Media. He used the word “evangelical” deliberately, not to connect Islamism with evangelical Protestantism, but to emphasize “evangelizing here as a verb.”

This evangelization is not limited to militant groups like the Islamic State (ISIS) or even the Muslim Brotherhood. Rather, it goes all the way to the top of the Middle Eastern power structure, and has spread into the West via their proxies. The most common Islamist ideology behind terror is Wahhabism, a “puritanical” reform movement which inspires radical acts.

“I met with the Saudi governments, they defend Wahhabi ideas, saying that the Al Qaedas of the world misinterpret Wahhabism,” Jasser, whose parents came to the U.S. from Syria and who has personally traveled the Middle East advocating for religious freedom, recalled. While Saudi government leaders attempt to distance themselves from terror, they are preaching the same message.

“The Saudis are distributing ideas that are commensurate with ISIS,” the AIFD president explained. The Saudi leaders “discuss the defeat of the Jews and the Christians, that the Christians are no longer monotheists, but polytheists. The House of Saud defends the theological legitimacy of Wahhabi ideology.”

Jasser pointed out that the Saudi government will often arrest individuals who dare to criticize the government and charge them with apostasy against Islam. They can be even more ruthless than ISIS, and Jasser claimed that Saudi Arabia carried out more beheadings in the last twelve months than ISIS.

“The bottom line is the ideology is the same,” the AIFD president stated, bluntly. “Let’s say it was cocaine, the government distributes cocaine on the streets so that people get addicted and then they legitimize a police increase, and then martial law. That’s not a conspiracy theory, that’s the reality.”

Combating Islamic terrorism from every angle

We are at war with radical Islamic terrorism. The recent increase in attacks around the world underscores the ineffectiveness of current counterterrorism efforts. A strategy combining both hard and soft power is the only way to eradicate this threat. A new focus must be made on soft power to attack the root causes or stimuli of Islamic radicalism, which in turn leads to extremist terrorism and violence. To achieve this, Islam will have to undergo a reformation to reconcile itself with the 21st century world. Eliminating blasphemy laws and all consideration of the applicability of Sharia Law in the secular realm, as opposed to the religious, are milestone barometers of progress in this evolution.

Islamic extremism has extracted a huge price in life, freedom, and money from all peaceful and law abiding peoples. In the past year alone, Islamic terrorists have claimed responsibility for attacks in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Sweden, and the Philippines, and repeatedly massacring Christians in Egypt. Further, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) continues to destabilize the Middle East in their attempt to establish a caliphate in the region.

The increasing frequency of attacks proves the severity of challenges faced by the West to deter already radicalized terrorists. Classifying the terrorists as enemy combatants and restricting their movement in and out of Iraq and Syria would impede migration of the “returnee terrorists” to the West. Those who interact with terrorists and return home should be prosecuted for treason.

Further, an intensive vetting process is necessary for refugees and asylum seekers from countries that have a history with Islamic extremism. The United States and other Western countries need to know exactly who is entering their territory. One would think this fundamental aspect of national sovereignty would be obvious. Until proper procedures are put in place, including, in the United States, a massive overhaul of our leaky, unenforceable visa system, a travel ban from “at risk” countries is a reasonable precaution to assure that no extremists reach the West and to contain the threat.

Additionally, we need to set political correctness aside and have an honest discussion about religious extremism. We cannot turn a blind eye to those who are attending preaching’s of radical Islam. Embedding surveillance resources within communities where there is cause to believe Muslim individuals may have become radicalized is in our national security interest. These measures of increased surveillance, especially concerning social media, of people who follow or attend the preaching of radical Imams, can help expose the more “home grown” radicals and potential “lone wolves.”
